Her Story

About Keya

Keya Gupta is a healthcare executive whose passion for improving patient care was shaped by deeply personal experience. As a full-time caregiver for her father during his battle with end-stage renal disease and Parkinson's disease, she managed his care throughout her undergraduate and graduate years, witnessing firsthand the challenges patients and families face when navigating the healthcare system. That experience inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare administration, with a mission to make care more accessible, compassionate, and impactful for communities. Today, she serves as Chief of Staff at Kaiser Permanente, where she helps lead strategic initiatives that advance operational excellence and patient-centered care.

Over the past seven years, Gupta has built a reputation as an innovative and purpose-driven healthcare leader, advancing rapidly across hospitals, health plans, and integrated health systems. She earned her bachelor's degree from UC Irvine before completing her Master of Healthcare Administration at Concordia University Irvine. Among her most significant career achievements is helping open the nation's first all-electric acute care hospital, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that reflects her commitment to transforming healthcare delivery. Her leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce's prestigious 40 Under 40 Award, and she is known for combining strategic vision with a hands-on understanding of the patient journey.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Gupta is passionate about service, mentorship, and developing the next generation of healthcare leaders. She serves on the boards of the American College of Healthcare Executives in both Southern and Northern California, as well as the Down Syndrome Association of Orange County, where she began as an intern before later joining the board. She is an active mentor and educator who believes in giving back by sharing knowledge and supporting emerging professionals. Guided by the values of ethics, integrity, transparency, and lifelong learning, Gupta attributes her success to staying curious, embracing new opportunities, and honoring the legacy of her father through meaningful work that improves the lives of others.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Keya

01What do you attribute your success to?

You know, I don't even know if I would call myself successful. I feel like I have so much further to go, and so many more communities to make an impact on. So I would say thus far, I mean, it's definitely being curious, saying yes, being open to learning and growing, so that one day, I can be in a position where I'm able to make large-scale change across our communities.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say what so many of my mentors have told me, and it's to trust your gut, trust your gut because you will be faced with difficult decisions that you'll have to make, but the way to the answer is always to trust your gut.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say affordability, like folks being able to afford their care in whatever way that that could be. I would also say the emergence of AI in the healthcare field is something that is starting to come quickly, but I think you know, we don't have a good idea of what the impact will be. I think there are obviously some pros and cons, but I think like any other industry with the insurgence of AI, folks are worried about if their jobs will be replaced. And so those are kind of the two biggest things for me. I think it's the affordability piece and then AI

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Well, I think it's important from an interpersonal standpoint to rest and recharge. I think a lot of times as leaders, we forget that we need to take care of ourselves to in order to take care of others. You know, whether you're a physician, a nurse, or an administrator, you know, your main job is serving others, and so it's really important that we take some time for ourselves, you know, in order to fuel ourselves to be able to serve our communities. I think in the workplace for me, like, ethics is a big thing ethics, definitely integrity and transparency are the three things that come to mind when you're thinking about patient care
