Her Story

About Khushboo

I have been working in the design construction field for 8-9 years since 2017, and I currently work as a BIM Manager, a position I've held for about 5 years across different companies. In my current role, my main focus is creating automated cost documentation systems that connect our design modeling work in Revit to software that can automatically generate costs for our designs. This is really exciting to me because it's about connecting different worlds together - design and construction - and reducing the amount of time people spend doing everything manually. I also handle design modeling, train people on various software platforms, work with project managers on creating contracts for laser scan teams, and coordinate with consultants on clashes and other coordination issues. I'm passionate about 3D modeling software and have been since college, where I used to do my projects on software instead of drafting by paper and pen. When I moved to the States, I started as a draftsman and had really good leadership that pushed me into this field. What drives me is learning about new technology and software, and knowing that this is the future of construction - it's about how we can reduce the amount of time people spend doing things manually and increase efficiency.

Ten minutes with Khushboo

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think the support I get from my family has been crucial to my success, along with the dedication I give to my work. Having that family support system allows me to fully commit myself to what I do professionally, and I make sure to give my full attention and effort to whatever I'm working on.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just never be afraid of men and make sure you use your voice. I know it's sometimes difficult - you come across instances where you feel you're not given enough credit as you should - but that does not mean that you are not capable. You should not listen to those voices that try to diminish you. Instead, you should listen to your inner voice and just keep going as you would. Don't let anyone make you doubt yourself or hold you back.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

My field is led by men, so being a woman in this industry is a little difficult. Sometimes your voice does not get heard as it should. That's the biggest challenge I feel. But maybe somehow along the way, I've also been lucky enough that I've met very few of those kind of men who don't listen. I've gotten more men who do listen to me. But I still feel the challenge when I'm sitting in a room full of men - sometimes your voice does not get acknowledged and listened to as it should. It's a real issue that shouldn't be like that.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Dedication, commitment, and just giving priority to things at the right time are most important to me. When I'm working, I'm fully focused on my work, but when I'm at home in my personal life, I don't even think about my work. I just try to be there in the moment. I believe in being fully present wherever I am - whether that's at work or in my personal life - and giving each area the attention it deserves at the right time.
