Kiana L. Holbrook, PhD
Dr. Kiana L. Holbrook, PhD is a dedicated Research Scientist whose work bridges analytical chemistry, forensic science, and biomedical research. Based in the San Antonio metropolitan area, Dr. Holbrook currently serves at the Southwest Research Institute, where she leads projects in analytical method development, biomarker signature detection, and environmental fate studies. Her technical expertise spans GC/MS analysis, solid-phase microextraction, and serological and toxicological testing, skills honed through years of rigorous research and academic training. She has also received specialized instruction in GLP, GMP, and NELAC-accredited laboratory standards, underscoring her commitment to scientific excellence and precision.
Before her current role, Dr. Holbrook served as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Graduate Teaching Assistant at The University of Texas at El Paso, where she earned her PhD in Chemistry. Her doctoral research focused on volatile organic compound (VOC) profiling of biological specimens for early renal cancer detection and on developing standard operating procedures for specimen integrity. She also holds a Master of Science in Forensic Science from Texas Tech University, where her studies centered on odor profiling and the effects of presumptive reagents on biological evidence. Her career reflects a strong interdisciplinary foundation in chemistry, criminology, anthropology, psychology, and biochemistry, all contributing to her holistic approach to forensic and biomedical research.
Beyond the laboratory, Dr. Holbrook is deeply committed to community engagement and scientific advocacy. She has volunteered extensively to promote forensic science education and environmental awareness, including work as a Recycling Coordinator and Forensic Science Advocate. As the Founder and Student Director of the Texas Academy Forensic Science Society, she continues to inspire future scientists through mentorship and outreach. Guided by her personal mission, “Striving to make an impact, one person at a time,” Dr. Kiana Holbrook exemplifies the integration of scientific innovation, leadership, and community-driven inspiration.
