Her Story

About KIM

My career in the auto industry started almost 20 years ago in an unexpected way - my husband and I moved to a new town, he went in to buy a vehicle, and they were looking for a cashier. He pretty much said I'd take the job, and I didn't really get asked if I wanted it, but he was looking out for me, and here I am. Over the years, I've worked my way through different departments - I've been a service manager, a parts manager, and now I'm an office manager who assists the controller/CFO with multiple stores. My day-to-day involves everything from daily deposits and handling all the car deals that come through, to making sure they get financed, ensuring all the paperwork is done and sent to lien holders, and title work. Anytime service, parts, sales, or any other department has a problem, everybody usually comes to me to fix it. I work with more than one store, so if the other store has issues, they call. What makes accounting in the auto industry unique is that it's completely different from regular accounting - it has a different set of rules and guidelines, it's a whole other animal. Nine times out of ten, you have to work your way into a position like this because you can't just hire somebody off the street. You can't really go to college for this unless it's a college specifically for this job. It helps to have an accounting background, but this is not something a college can teach. I like working with numbers, and I've learned to be flexible and multifunctional, able to assist anybody in any department. My most notable achievement is being able to be that flexible helper - someone who can work across all areas. We're in the background as office managers and title clerks, and we're not considered as important as the departments that bring in revenue, but we are the glue that holds this whole thing together.

Ten minutes with KIM

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never giving up. This job is a challenge every day, and I like a challenge - if it's not challenging, I move on. The auto industry is a challenge, actually, and that's what keeps me going and helps me succeed in what I do.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say try everything you can and don't limit yourself. Find your niche, and then expand on it. Learn it from start to finish, and then become the best at it. And be patient while you're doing it, because it does not happen overnight.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is that you learn something new every day because no two car deals are the same - they may look the same, but there's always something different. The challenge is figuring out how to fix it, because nine times out of ten, you have to make phone calls and ask and ask and ask until you find the right person who can help you. My boss might say they can't figure something out and ask if I can do it - I may not have done it before, but I know who I can call. As for opportunities, they are there if you're willing to learn. I've learned parts, service, title work, accounting, and taught myself some of the finance part. The opportunities are there if you're willing to learn, but nowadays, finding somebody willing to learn is very difficult.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and integrity are most important to me. I've always been raised that a person is only as good as their word. If you give your word, follow through - to me, that shows true character. If you ask me to do something and I give you my word that I'll get it done, I may not get it done quick depending on what the situation is or the circumstances, but I will get it done.
