01What do you attribute your success to?
Empathy and Drive: The Two Qualities That Shaped My Sales Career
When people ask what makes someone successful in sales, they often expect me to say product knowledge, negotiation skills, or the ability to close a deal.
Those things matter, but they are not what I believe separates good salespeople from great ones.
For me, the answer is simple: empathy and drive.
Early in my career, I worked in advertising sales, pharmaceutical sales, and medical sales. Each position taught me something different, but one lesson remained the same. Every business owner and every decision-maker wants to know that you understand their challenges before you recommend a solution.
I learned very quickly that people don't want to be "sold." They want to be heard.
Some clients wanted to grow their business. Others were struggling with declining sales, staffing issues, or increasing competition. Every conversation was different because every business was different.
That is where empathy comes in.
Empathy allows you to ask better questions. It helps you understand what keeps a business owner awake at night. It shifts the conversation from "Here's what I sell" to "Here's how I can help."
But empathy without action isn't enough.
The second quality is drive.
I've always been competitive. My family used to joke that my cousin and I became barracudas whenever we played board games. We both wanted to win. As I entered the business world, that competitive spirit became a healthy drive to keep learning, improving, and finding better ways to help my clients succeed.
Drive meant researching a prospect before walking into a meeting. It meant following up when others gave up. It meant continuing to learn new technology, earning additional degrees and certifications, and constantly looking for ways to provide more value.
Today, as the owner of Kim Pestana Marketing and Web Design, that same philosophy guides everything I do.
Marketing and web design are about much more than creating a beautiful website or an eye-catching advertisement. They are about understanding your audience before they ever pick up the phone or submit a contact form. They are about anticipating questions, overcoming objections, building trust, and making it easy for potential customers to choose your business.
My sales experience has given me an advantage in marketing because I understand what happens after a lead is generated. I know the questions prospects ask. I know the objections they have. Most importantly, I know that every successful business relationship begins with trust.
At Kim Pestana Marketing and Web Design, every project starts by listening. Every business has a unique story, different goals, and different challenges. My job is to understand those needs and develop marketing strategies and websites that not only look professional but also help businesses grow.
Empathy builds relationships.
Drive creates results.
When you combine the two, you're no longer just selling a product or service. You're building partnerships that help businesses grow, and that's the kind of success that lasts.
Kim Pestana Marketing and Web Design believes that the best marketing doesn't pressure people into buying. It educates, inspires confidence, solves problems, and creates lasting relationships. That's the approach I bring to every client and every project.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Learn the rule of 72 for credit card debt and investments. Get a 401K when young even if on credit card. Don't trust everybody you meet. Keep your cards close to your chest. Wait till you have 5 interactions with somebody before trusting them.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges: getting people to make new websites when they already have one; ensuring clients own their site (not Wix etc.); site must convert not just rank; pretty but secure sites. Opportunity: educate on pain points like ownership, backups, conversion, security.
