Her Story
About Kimako
I am a nurse with over 27 years of experience and the founder of Heart and Soul Nursing and Consulting, a faith-based nursing and consulting business. I oversee a 63-bed hematology, oncology, stem cell transplant, and cellular therapy unit where I run the day-to-day operations, develop staff, and create innovations to help improve how we care for our patients. I want to make sure that every patient receives not only the care that they need, but also the care that they deserve. My unit is very diverse, and that was intentional, because I want to make sure that every patient is cared for here. Cancer does not discriminate, so I want to make sure that we have nurses here that care for everyone, no matter what your race, nationalities, or how much money you have. I use my faith to guide my leadership every single day. Through my consulting business, I do coaching for leaders and professionals, but also coaching for new grad nurses to help them grow in these changing times. It's a space where someone can give you true feedback, not just something that you want to hear, to help you be successful, especially in your first year as a new nurse. I help nurses understand what they hold - the power that they hold, the reach, the touch, the love that they hold, just from being the nurse. I have developed a program for new grads and have completed a book as a journal based on Psalm 91 for nurses and new grad nurses. I also started a prayer line and a financial stewardship circle for women, because it doesn't matter how much money you make, it's how you steward it. Everything I do is in line with what the Lord is asking me to do. I've created 10 face-to-face professional development courses that I taught last year, and my goal is to bring them into the corporate space. I'm currently re-recording them to make them available on demand, but they are available for me to come live or on Zoom in the corporate space, church space, or small business space to teach them and give professionals tools on how to use their faith in the workspace and how to deal with situations using their faith. I also love to empower women and young girls, so I started doing prayer board brunches where you create a prayer board, not a vision board, because you can't do anything without God. I do these brunches once a year, and it's evolving into a prayer board retreat. I've done mommy and daughter prayer board brunches to help mothers reconnect with their daughters and have a great activity to do with them. It has really redeveloped and rekindled relationships with moms and their teen daughters, young daughters, or adult daughters. I am a woman of faith, a woman of God, a leader, and I want to make sure that I'm following His lead and not my own. I ask the Lord to do His will with me every single day, to go before me, and to not let my spirit take over, but let His will be done and not my own in all that I do.

Ten minutes with Kimako
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith and being obedient to the Lord. I use my faith to guide my leadership every single day. Everything I do is in line with what the Lord is asking me to do. I am a woman of faith, a woman of God, a leader, and I want to make sure that I'm following His lead and not my own. I ask the Lord to do His will with me every single day, to go before me, and to not let my spirit take over, but let His will be done and not my own in all that I do. I'm being obedient to the Lord and following Him.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My goal is for nurses, new grads, to understand what they hold - the power that they hold, the reach, the touch, the love that they hold, just from being the nurse. I want them to understand that patients put their lives in our hands. When you put on those gloves, all that falls to the wayside, and the patient gives you the ultimate trust, which is their life. They don't know you, but they automatically give you their trust. In our human lives, we don't do that at all. So I want new nurses to understand the power, reach, touch, and love that they hold. I provide coaching to help them grow, to give them true feedback, not just something that you want to hear, to help them be successful, especially in their first year as a new nurse. I give them that support from a leadership standpoint, because a lot of times nurses only talk to nurses at the bedside who don't necessarily have the vision of the organization, the vision of what's happening, and what's needed. I help them understand how to use their voice, how to be safe, how to use their integrity, because that's all we have as nurses. The reality is that patients put their lives in our hands, and we need to honor that trust.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me are faith, integrity, and ensuring everyone receives the care they deserve. I use my faith to guide my leadership every single day, and everything I do is in line with what the Lord is asking me to do. Integrity is all we have as nurses - patients put their lives in our hands and give us the ultimate trust. I want to make sure that every patient receives not only the care that they need, but also the care that they deserve. My unit is very diverse, and that was intentional, because I want to make sure that every patient is cared for here. Cancer does not discriminate, so I want to make sure we have nurses here that care for everyone, no matter what your race, nationalities, or how much money you have. It's all about giving you what you need, but also what you deserve. I also believe in giving grace - we've got to remember who we are in Christ and give others grace. We don't know what they're going through, what they're dealing with, and how can we love on them and still be professional in the same space. I ask the Lord to do His will with me every single day, to go before me, and to not let my spirit take over, but let His will be done and not my own in all that I do.
