What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith in God. I always pray for wisdom, courage, and knowledge each day and through any large project, whether it's figuring out an Excel formula, streamlining a process, or developing a new process. I’m a creative problem solver. I also rely on my interpersonal skills to effectively obtain the information needed. My faith and belief in prayer, combined with these technical accounting, interpersonal, and problem solving skills, and dedication have been the foundation of my success.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always do your best and always be willing to accept any challenge, even if it seems difficult. That's where you grow - when things are uncomfortable. I know from my own experience that the challenges were always exciting to me, but when it was difficult and there were long hours to put in, it's what happens in the trenches with your team that grows you and sustains you over time. Those challenges are the life lessons that helped set the trajectory of my career. Each time I have looked for a job, it's been those relationships I've built that lead to new opportunities. It's your commitment when you show up each day to work and give your best to your team - that's what sets you apart and gives you opportunities for more knowledge to be gained along the way. The three managers I followed to other companies were all women who recognized the potential in me and trusted me to get the job done, whether as a leader or an individual contributor. So I would say, show up every day, give your best, be committed, be focused, and be a light in the world around you, because if you focus on the positive, good things will come, even on the darkest days.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The need for effective cross-functional communication (different departments "speak different languages"), managing long hours during critical periods and adapting to system/process changes, ERP projects, and mergers/acquisitions — all of which present opportunities for growth.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Faith, prayer, kindness, respect for all people regardless of role, commitment, empowerment of others, and maintaining a positive outlook.
