About Kimberly
Kimberly Bishop, M.A., is an adjunct professor of psychology with extensive experience in online higher education, teaching primarily at Southern New Hampshire University and the University of Maryland Global Campus. She specializes in courses such as Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, Psychological Testing and Assessment, and first-year experience seminars, working primarily with adult learners and at-risk student populations. Her instructional approach emphasizes compassionate pedagogy, academic rigor, and strong instructor presence, with a focus on creating structured yet supportive learning environments in asynchronous settings.
Before transitioning into academia, she worked in inpatient substance abuse treatment, an experience that shaped her commitment to preparing students for real-world clinical and counseling environments. She holds a Master of Health Science in Marriage and Family Counseling and is a doctoral candidate in Higher Education Leadership at Capella University, where her research centers on trauma-informed teaching, faculty development, and improving retention for at-risk online learners. 03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Teach from your heart with compassion and empathy. Put yourself in their shoes and help students who are struggling rather than criticize them.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The greatest challenge is ensuring students receive emotional support and encouragement. There is opportunity to adopt compassionate teaching practices that support academic achievement and personal growth.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value compassion, empathy, integrity, encouragement, resilience, and lifelong learning. Family, faith, and creating positive impacts through service and mentorship are central.
