Her Story

About Kimberly

Kimberly Evans serves as founder and CEO of an early-stage tech company in the rideshare and mobility space, a role she has held for about 6 years. As a fourth-generation entrepreneur, she brings more than three decades of experience from multiple industries, including a government career as well as work in fashion, software sales, customer success, quality assurance, and client support. She started her current company as a non-technical founder and has overseen operations, driver accounts, customer success, community platforms, social media marketing, and more in a hands-on startup environment. Evans attended community college where she majored in English and Communications but did not graduate or pursue higher education, instead relying on certifications from nonprofit work and a bootstrapped approach. She is a member of organizations including Brain Trust and NABO, though not currently active in either, and she focuses on impact through volunteering. Evans attributes her success to her faith, knowing that God has the ultimate plan, along with the life lessons she has learned and her personal qualities of tenacity, persistence, and grit. She values faith and a strong work ethic across her professional responsibilities and her family life. Among the biggest challenges she identifies in her field are raising sufficient capital to scale quickly, particularly as a minority woman, and securing adequate operational support.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kimberly

01What do you attribute your success to?

Besides my faith and knowing that God has the ultimate plan for my life, I would say my lessons, my life lessons, have made me who I am, and the fact that having very tenacity and persistence and grit also drives me. I'm not a quitter. I'm going to exhaust every avenue with the knowledge and experience that I have to make sure that I don't quit too soon or too late.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Build your company around great culture. Invest in people and not systems and processes. Be agile, never look at people as if they are lazy, find what drives them, find their strength, and if you have to shift some systems or processes to make sure that they are fitting, then do that before just discounting a person.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do the research, do the work, find out from others in the industry what worked and what did not work. Trust yourself to make decisions, be very decisive and stand on your decision whether good, bad, or indifferent. Find out as much as you can about the industry from people who have come before you, both successful and those who were not able to be successful.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges right now for us is being able to raise enough capital to scale and grow our company quickly. Funding is an obstacle for women in general but especially for minority women. Having enough or adequate operational support to get the company to the next level, which is tied into funding because when you can't pay people they don't always produce well.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Across the board, faith and a great work ethic. Whether professionally or serving my family and taking care of my family, having a great work ethic to do the very best that you can.
