About Kimberly
Kimberly Ferrell serves as the coordinator and director of the Women's Resource Center at Eastern Michigan University, a role she has held for two and a half years. She is also a professor of community education and an author whose first book, Respectability Politics, addresses the triple oppression of Black women in America through the lenses of racism, sexism, and classism. Ferrell has spent eight years in the field of women's studies and women's rights. She earned her bachelor's degree in communication with a minor in women and gender studies, followed by a master's degree in women and gender studies, and completed her PhD in education in the urban community at Eastern Michigan University, making her a Triple Eagle. Her career path includes work with Dress for Success as a volunteer and later founding her own business, Cross Connect, to link women with community resources. She is a member of the National Women's Association, the Women's Commission at Eastern Michigan University, the Presidential Commission Steering Committee, and founded the Women's Resource Center Advisory Committee. In addition to her professional roles, Ferrell is a minister who has led the Followers of the Way ministry for six or seven years and established a women's support group and prayer group in her community.

01What do you attribute your success to?
Family support system, strong network of friends and mentors, perseverance, self-celebration and encouragement during challenges like completing a PhD.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Follow your dreams. The sky is the limit. Believe in yourself. Leave room for mistakes and challenges but keep moving forward. If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but please keep moving forward.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Struggle with lack of resources and support in women's studies programs and departments due to political and social factors, but opportunity to thrive with powerful supporters, investors valuing women's voices and providing platforms for decision-making.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Truth, authenticity, being ethical, respectful, supportive, advocacy, honesty, integrity, caring, compassionate, loving. Being a helper who listens and finds solutions.
