Her Story
About Kimberly
Kimberly Jones is a Patient Advocate Supervisor with Texas Health Action, a role in which she leads a team dedicated to connecting patients with the medications and financial resources they need to stay on treatment, from copay assistance enrollment to support for the uninsured. Alongside this position, she serves as a public health specialist with Austin Public Health, where she delivers HIV and STI education, testing, and connection to community resources. Jones has spent roughly thirteen years building a career in healthcare, a path she entered after completing a bachelor's degree in psychology and an internship at a drug rehabilitation facility, where her first exposure to HIV testing ignited a lasting passion for the field.
Before stepping into her current supervisory role, Jones spent four years working as a disease intervention specialist, a position that involved health education, notifying individuals of potential exposures, and guiding people toward testing and treatment. That hands-on, community-facing experience continues to inform how she leads her team today. She is currently working toward a certification in disease intervention and intends to pursue a graduate certificate in epidemiology and infection prevention as she moves toward a broader administrative role in public health.
Beyond her clinical and supervisory work, Jones has contributed to her community through nonprofit outreach efforts, including organizing book bag giveaways and supply drives for families in need. She grounds her professional life in a set of core values: trust, integrity, compassion, and responsibility, principles she applies both in how she supports patients and in how she mentors and develops her staff. For those entering the field, she encourages patience, self-grace, and choosing a path rooted in genuine passion rather than financial reward, viewing every professional experience as a building block toward long-term purpose and impact.

Ten minutes with Kimberly
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I'd encourage anyone entering this field to be patient with themselves and to give themselves grace along the way. Choose your work because you're passionate about it, not because of the paycheck, since passion is what carries you through the harder days. I'd also tell them to focus on building transferable skills and pursuing professional development, so that every role becomes a meaningful part of a larger career path.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
HIV and STI work remains an underserved area that is constantly evolving alongside new medications and prevention tools. One of the biggest challenges I see is ensuring patients can actually access and afford their medications, whether they're dealing with copays or lack insurance altogether. At the same time, I see real opportunity in expanding outreach and education, and in building programs that meet people where they are.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Trust, both in others and in myself, is key to everything I do. Integrity means doing what's right even when no one is watching. Compassion is essential in healthcare, showing kindness and meeting people where they are. And responsibility means owning my actions and being accountable for others.
