Her Story

About Kimberly

I began my career at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in their sponsored projects and research office, which was essentially a startup at the time. I started as administrative support staff and was promoted several times, eventually becoming a research information specialist. From there, I worked at Drexel University in their Central Research Administration Office as a grants administrator, and then at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where I did a lot of work helping to stand up their nephrology department. All of this experience led me to working on the federal side, issuing grants rather than receiving them, but in the same realm of grants management. I landed in my federal role with the Office of Administration for Children and Families, where I've been for the last 7 years. I started in the office start and eventually moved over to the Office of Grants Management, which is where I am now. My work is pretty much cradle to grave, covering everything in the whole grant life cycle - from competitive grants and pre-award activities to issuing new or continuing grants and post-award ongoing monitoring. My main function is making sure that federal dollars are being spent correctly within regulations. Right now, I have a portfolio that's probably about $300 or $400 million, with all those various grants and grant recipients at different points in their own grant life cycle.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kimberly

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think perseverance and having clear goals are key to my success. But I also believe it's important to have support in the people around you. Beyond even just mentorship, having leaders and colleagues who are willing to sponsor you makes a real difference.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to focus on excellence and lifelong learning, rather than perfection.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My main priority in terms of passion or cause is definitely education, particularly for children and early childhood education, and just economic development for children and families who are needing that kind of support. I think my community is what inspired me to get into my field. When it comes to expanding my network, it's not necessarily just to know people - for me, it's more about connecting with other people that have similar passions and visions for the future for our community.
