Based in Monterey, California, she supports underserved communities by connecting individuals with essential healthcare services and resources, including housing, food, and transportation assistance. Drawing on her lived experiences, Kimberly approaches her work with compassion and a strong commitment to helping people rebuild their lives, one person at a time. Kimberly began her professional journey in 1998 after earning an associate degree in computer science with honors from Heald College. Following approximately 15 years in information technology, she pursued additional coursework in counseling and social services at Hartnell College, transitioning into a career focused on helping others directly. Her professional experience reflects a unique combination of technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and interpersonal skills. Through her work in enhanced care management, she has supported Medi-Cal members in accessing follow-up medical care, coordinating appointments with healthcare providers, obtaining prescriptions, and navigating essential community resources. Kimberly attributes her success to the resilience she developed through overcoming personal challenges, including 10 years of homelessness and opioid and heroin addiction, as well as the strong work ethic instilled in her by her father. These experiences have strengthened her empathy, listening skills, and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. She believes in understanding each person's circumstances and providing personalized, judgment-free support that addresses both medical and social needs. Through her dedication to service, Kimberly strives to help individuals achieve greater stability, independence, and lasting improvements in their quality of life.

Ten minutes with Kimberly

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the strong work ethic my father instilled in me while I worked in his shoe repair shop at age eight, teaching me perseverance and determination. Overcoming homelessness and drug addiction also strengthened my resilience and inspired me to take responsibility for my life, learn from my experiences, and help others facing similar challenges.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I can share is to listen carefully and communicate effectively. Understanding people’s needs and making them feel comfortable and supported are essential to building meaningful connections. My lived experiences allow me to relate to others on a deeper level and approach my work with genuine passion and a commitment to helping people.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women to combine their academic knowledge with hands-on experience. When helping people facing homelessness or other difficult circumstances, take the time to listen to their stories without judgment or assumptions. Everyone has a unique journey, and understanding their individual experiences beyond statistics is essential to providing compassionate, meaningful, and effective support.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is limited funding and programs that end too soon, making long-term support difficult for people experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health issues. Although opportunities exist to provide housing, food, and essential resources, lasting solutions require continuous, comprehensive care, including detox, medication, stable housing, and job placement, rather than short-term assistance.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Listening and effective communication are the values I consider most important in both my personal and professional life. They allow me to understand people's needs, build trust, and create an environment where others feel heard and supported. My lived experiences have strengthened my compassion and commitment to helping others, making my work a passion rather than just a job.
