Her Story
About Kimberly
I'm a sales and marketing specialist with ABC News, where I've been for almost 2 years now. Before that, I spent 6 years with the Relocation Guide of the Triad, where I wore many hats as associate publisher, sales manager, customer service representative, and marketing director. My publication was the largest of all 8 throughout the state, and I was so good at sales that they would send me to Western North Carolina and down to Cape Fear to sell advertising in those guides as well. I'm a people person at heart, and my main areas of expertise are interacting with people, understanding their side and their perspective, and coming up with problem-solving solutions for them. What I'm most proud of professionally is my work with the Relocation Guide, because I had to cold call and make appointments with business owners, ask them if they wanted to advertise for everyone relocating here, then take all their artwork and send it to my design team to have everything looking very polished and professional. I was really good at helping them see the value of what we had to offer.

Ten minutes with Kimberly
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to life experiences and learning things the hard way. I had a rough childhood with an abusive father, and I had to kind of fend for myself when I was young and do my own thing. That was very hard, it was a struggle, but I had to learn the hard way. Life is not always easy, and I think it's important for people to know that. You don't have control over your own situation sometimes, like with parenting and parents, but you can still be strong despite that. Don't be too hard or negative on yourself, because you can overcome difficult circumstances.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just be a sponge. Try to take in as much knowledge as you possibly can. There's no such thing as knowing too much or knowing enough, so you should be able to grow and learn something every day. Make sure you're humble enough to learn something every day, because none of us knows everything, even though some people act like they do. Even though I'm older, even at my age, I learn something new every day. We're supposed to learn something every day.
