Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kiyah
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success is rooted in my family and the values they instilled in me. My parents taught me that resilience, discipline, and consistency matter far more than talent alone. My stepfather served in the military for over 30 years, overcoming the challenges of deployment while never losing sight of his commitment to our family. My mother has dedicated her career to public service with the federal government, and my father has spent years investing in young people through after-school programs in Fairfax County. Watching their sacrifices inspired me to become a college graduate and pursue opportunities that once felt out of reach. Their work ethic reminds me every day that success isn't given it's earned through perseverance, humility, and showing up when things get difficult.Their example became even more meaningful as I faced my own challenges. As a student-athlete, I endured multiple knee surgeries that tested me physically, mentally, and emotionally. There were moments when my path in basketball looked uncertain, but those experiences taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of finding purpose beyond adversity. Every setback became an opportunity to grow stronger, adapt, and continue moving forward with determination.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
In the sports industry, relationships can open doors, but your work ethic, character, and consistency are what keep those doors open. Show up prepared, be willing to do the work that others overlook, and never believe any task is beneath you. Every opportunity big or small is a chance to demonstrate your value. I've also learned that success comes from being proactive rather than waiting for opportunities to find you. Build genuine relationships, stay curious, continue learning, and always look for ways to add value. In a fast-paced industry like sports, people remember those who are dependable, adaptable, and willing to go the extra mile.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Dont give up it doesnt matter if you are a woman you go for it and it is a male-dominated field. focus on the competition, avoid the participation trophies, and build relatable narratives, and perform at the highest level do the little things because the little things can add up to the big things.Believe in your abilities before asking others to believe in them. Sports is still a male-dominated industry, but your knowledge, preparation, and work ethic will always speak louder than stereotypes.
Don't seek participation seek excellence. Focus on becoming exceptional at your craft. Master the details, build genuine relationships, tell authentic stories, and never stop learning. Stay competitive, remain confident, and remember that consistency creates opportunities. The little things you do every day eventually become the big things that define your career.Never let someone tell you a seat at the table isn't meant for you. Sports has traditionally been a male-dominated industry, but your preparation, confidence, and work ethic will always speak louder than stereotypes.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The sports industry is evolving faster than ever through digital media, AI, athlete branding, and fan engagement. While the industry remains male-dominated, that challenge also creates incredible opportunities for women who are prepared to lead with confidence and expertise. The biggest opportunity is creating authentic connections between brands, athletes, and fans through meaningful storytelling. Organizations are looking for leaders who understand both analytics and human connection and that's where the future of sports marketing is headed.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Good health, family for sure, loyalty, communication, honesty, having fun and not taking everything so serious, Everything I do is guided by integrity, faith, family, loyalty, resilience, communication, and continuous growth. I believe success means little if it isn't shared with the people who helped you get there. I value honesty, accountability, teamwork, and treating people with respect. I also believe it's important to enjoy the journey, celebrate wins, and never lose sight of why you started.
