Her Story

About Kou

From the time I walk into the office until I leave, my number one goal is to help somebody with housing. If I can house somebody every day, that puts joy on my face. When I get that call saying 'Ms. K, I found my lease,' I start to celebrate because I have accomplished something that day. Last year, when we didn't get funding for the whole year, I was so sad, but I kept trying to reach out to other agencies. I started going to churches to see if I could get them to help these people in whatever way they could, and the few that I was able to get off the street just poured joy on my face. I'm constantly on the phone calling people, asking them questions like 'are you still homeless? What can I do to help change the situation?' If someone doesn't have a job and is trying to find one, I'm also reaching out to employers that can work with them based on their situation. Whether it's in the healthcare field or in housing case management, just helping somebody and listening to somebody makes them feel better, and that's the biggest accomplishment in my whole career.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is finding the grant and finding money to house my clients. If it's left with me, everybody who walks in our office who wanted housing, I would help them, and all that paperwork would be laid on my desk. But with limited resources, it makes it harder. I'm constantly trying to get the grants to house my people, because I want to help everyone who needs it.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'm a Christian, and I hold my faith very dear. Even if I don't go to church, I can do online services or listen to preaching and music on YouTube. That's one value I hold dear to my heart. I have a small family, a daughter and a husband, and those two people, along with my extended family, are another value I hold very dear to me. I'm very close to my siblings. Family and religion are the values I hold, and also my community, my friends, my circle, and my work. I also love to volunteer and give my services. Those are the values I hold dearly for myself.
