Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kristal
01What do you attribute your success to?
I don't view myself as successful in the traditional sense. I see myself as someone who's living in purpose. As long as I'm doing what I'm supposed to do, I'm gonna keep moving. I just feel like I'm living in my God-given gifts. To me, that's what success is. But if I had to say who I attribute my success to, it's every Black woman, or woman, or person who has given me advice, those who have told me to write the book, those who have given me power, those who have given me quotes, those who have given me experiences. I believe I'm standing on the back of every person who's given me advice, every person who's raised me, every woman who's invested in me. I am that. I'm the embodiment of all of those experiences.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to stop waiting to feel ready. Your voice becomes clearer the more you use it. Start wherever you are, and be honest and true to your story, because that is enough.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Faith is my foundation and the most important value to me. When I'm stressed out, I realize I'm not doing things with God, and I need Him to do this with me. My first thing is I go back to my faith foundation, and that's where my emotions kind of balance back out. I also believe in prioritizing whatever is most important at the moment rather than trying to balance everything. Whatever has priority at the moment, I handle it. If my books need my attention now, that's my main focus. And if things don't work out, I go back to the drawing board and ask, okay, why didn't it work out? What can I do differently the next time? I'm also a big believer in knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing, because that's so important as a community.
