Her Story

About Kristen

I've been in the utility industry for 9 years, and it's been an amazing journey for me. I started in the news industry, which provided me with key skills in prioritization, writing, and storytelling, but transitioning to utilities gave me better work-life balance and tremendous professional growth. As Multimedia Production Manager at JEA, I manage the strategy for social media, including content creation, audience analysis, and reviewing graphics and video for our various channels. I also provide mentorship for our digital media specialists and other multimedia team members. What I love most about my career right now is the growth in the multimedia side of my role - being able to really hone in on storytelling for videos and graphics, diving into spaces where I may not have had as much experience before. One of my most notable achievements has been growing JEA's social media presence. We've really grown our LinkedIn channel with an average 10% engagement rate on our posts, which is phenomenal for a utility. We also launched our Instagram channel a few years ago, and being able to grow that for a younger audience and immerse ourselves in trends and reels has been an amazing transition. It makes us feel relatable and allows us to be seen more than just a brand, but as a community on the social networks where our audiences are.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to having great bosses and mentors. Without having great leaders, I wouldn't be where I'm at today. I think the leaders that provided me with opportunities and challenged me to continue to grow - without having those opportunities and challenges, I wouldn't be where I'm at. So, definitely to my mentors and my leaders.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to keep trying new things, because in the industry that we are working in, our day-to-day is always going to change, technology is always going to change, and being able to try new things is going to keep growing the skills and keep growing my knowledge in the space I'm in right now. So don't be stagnant, just keep trying new things.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would give women in my industry advice to never stop learning. Being able to continue to learn and push your education is going to keep you growing and growing your skill set. Learning new things is going to keep you motivated and keep you into what you're doing. In the utility industry and in the digital space that I'm in, learning new things - for me, I find exciting and it just keeps me up to pace. I think if other women were to stay immersed in their education and learning new things, it will just keep continuing to grow them.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think some opportunities in my industry would be just the area of technology and social media. We're continuing to see social media grow, and video grow, and just the changes that keep going there. We're seeing new ways to tell stories, new ways to connect with different audiences. Those, to me, I find as different opportunities - things to continue to grow us and to push us to be better and to reach these audiences even better. I think some challenges that we see in the industry as a utility in this digital video space is that there's different regulations and different rules, so continuing to find ways to be creative with being in our rules and regulations - being able to tell those stories and push the needle, so to speak, while still maintaining our public entity and being in that space.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that I think are most important are communication, accountability, and trust. With those three values, we're able to communicate effectively with one another, we're able to build the accountability with one another, and the trust with each other, so we're all on the same page. We can lean on each other for the different aspects that we need with everybody's different skill sets, and really be able to meet our project goals and our team goals. With those three aspects, I believe we can achieve all those together.
