Her Story
About Kristin
Kristen Lockwood is a healthcare professional with 20 years of experience across various roles including inpatient registration at a state psych facility, LPN clinical work in private sites and home health, and now managing documentation, compliance, and safety. She currently serves as Health Information and Quality Lead for VBC at a startup company that recently achieved Series B funding and expanded to multiple states. In this role, she oversees incoming documentation for patient data accuracy and compliance, collaborates with safety teams on incident documentation, manages incentive programs, and troubleshoots workflows to support operational excellence. Lockwood attributes her success to internal grit and a never-give-up attitude, as well as external encouragement from her grandmother who supported her studies. She recently completed her Bachelor's in healthcare administration in March and her MBA in five months after starting in May, walking for both degrees. Her advice to young women entering the field is to never give up, turn challenges into actionable steps, and follow through consistently to achieve goals.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kristin
01What do you attribute your success to?
Internally, my grit and never give up attitude, even in periods where I didn't believe in myself, but I still have that desire to help. Externally, my grandmother who always encouraged me and assisted me to be the best person I could be. She would sit down and help me with study guides and quiz me for tests, always wanting more for me than she had for herself.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To never give up, and take challenges and turn them into actionable steps. If you want something bad enough, you will make it happen. You might not be able to say today I want my master's degree and have it by tomorrow, but you can take actionable steps each week to make that happen. And if you make those actionable steps long enough and truly follow through, then it's gonna happen eventually.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges is wanting to help more. As a value-based care organization, we are geared towards getting and keeping patients healthy and ensuring they are on the right track to prevent negative health outcomes. When you are really passionate about that, you question can I do more or is there something I can do better, and sometimes it's not apparent what action you could take.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being action-driven, because intentions are wonderful but actions matter more. Taking those intentions and turning them into action is important. Also honesty and integrity, to know when you don't make the right choice and figure out where you went wrong and do better next time.
