Her Story
About Kristyn
Right out of college with a degree in international studies and creative advertising, I started my career as an administrative assistant with the New York Public Interest Research Group in their Manhattan headquarters. I then took on a role as Deputy Finance Director for an Attorney General campaign, traveling all around Florida meeting with donors and putting on parties. After the campaign ended, I moved to a non-profit crisis hotline providing social services throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe County in Florida, where I got exposure to community outreach, fundraising, and event management. I continued in marketing and events at a telecommunications company, getting hands-on with how products enter the market. While moving, I started a master's degree in public administration and policy and interned in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., serving with a legislative team. I then worked for a government contractor overseeing a SharePoint migration project, doing cost comparisons and working with the C-suite. I became a Government Relations Scholar at the National Governors Association, where I staffed congressional hearings, sat on calls with the White House, and worked with the legislative team to develop position papers. I did contract work at Autism Speaks doing grassroots work, acting as a conduit between the organization and volunteers across the country. I then became a Senior Public Affairs Specialist at a public housing agency, where I was quickly appointed acting communications manager, managing a team of seven doing legislative work, marketing, communications, website redesign, and hosting COVID vaccination clinics. After contracts with Transportation Energy Partners doing newsletters and fundraising, I was recruited to work in the U.S. House of Representatives doing newsletter work and consultation with different staff. I was promoted, then decided to move back to be closer to family. That's how I landed at my current university position, where I've been doing media relations and relationship management for the past two and a half years. It's been a wild ride with a lot of moving and life events, but I've ultimately found something that fulfills me.
