Her Story
About Kristyn
After spending time in the food industry and hospitality service, I made a career transition into bookkeeping and accounting about 2 years ago, looking for a better work-life balance. I started by working for my brother's lawn and landscaping and general contracting business, where I began learning QuickBooks Online and taking courses through QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor. I also had the opportunity to work for Daphne Alexander, a CPA, and she became a great mentor to me. I've been fortunate to have flexible work hours, working both from home and in the office as needed. My typical workday involves gathering source documents, categorizing transactions, invoicing clients, and reconciling accounts. I've always been commended on my attention to detail, double-checking everything and even reviewing other people's work to make sure everything is in line. I'm currently pursuing additional certifications through QuickBooks Online Pro Advisory. I am also currently looking for work opportunities where I can grow.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kristyn
01What do you attribute your success to?
This is an interesting question because I believe that when I want something I work hard for it and get what I want once I’ve put in the effort and earned it. However, I know I often turn to my dad when there are situations I’m unsure of how to approach or if I feel I’ve done everything I can and I don’t know how else I can be better. He always has the best advice.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice has been to advocate for myself and speak up. I have had to train myself to ask for help because it has been really hard for me to do in the past.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give is to learn the basics first and ask as many questions as you can. When in doubt, always consult someone with more experience and knowledge. Your integrity is everything and you need to make sure you are doing right by your client.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say a big opportunity is with technology because although bookkeeping software is changing and updating constantly, there are still many problems. Bill.com and QuickBooks are great, but they have much room to grow.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In my work life, I value respect, transparency and appropriate recognition. I believe in the workplace everyone deserves to be treated fairly with transparent communication about performance, and for it to be known when someone is going above and beyond expectations. Good employees deserve to feel valued.
In my personal life, family is everything. There are no people in this world that will have my back like my family.
