Her Story

About Krystal

Krystal Frasier has built a career in journalism spanning 12 years since beginning part-time work in 2014 at WISN in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Growing up watching both local and national news with her mother sparked her interest, combined with her passion for writing, leading her to pursue a bachelor's degree at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. She started there in fall 2010, graduated a semester early in winter 2013 after taking summer classes to support an internship, and now handles a range of behind-the-scenes responsibilities including catching up on overnight emails, planning story coverage and show edits, monitoring police scanners and viewer calls, reviewing public relations submissions, and checking felony records in the court system. Frasier has noted challenges such as maintaining work-life balance amid heavy news cycles, information overload, deadline pressures, and training staff on equipment. She recently participated in a Hearst mentoring program, where she was matched with mentor Lisa Folk, providing valuable guidance on professional situations.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't sweat the small stuff. Mistakes happen and we're all human. Give yourself a little bit of grace, apologize when needed, and fix it right away. Usually people don't stay mad.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure to give yourself time to unplug on your weekend, even if it's not the whole weekend. Give yourself a day to just not be in touch with everything because burnout is real in this industry.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Work-life balance is challenging because there's always so much to do. Information overload, heavy news cycles, pressure of deadlines, and ensuring staff is trained on equipment.
