Her Story

About Krystal

I fell into finance after I had my daughter, starting as a payroll-slash-human resources assistant and working my way up. My family has a printing business in New York, so I've always been around numbers, payroll, invoices, and those different things, which made me very savvy in that area. Over the last 12 years, I've built a heavy payroll and AP background, with a lot of that experience in the healthcare field. I just started a new position as a shared services manager for a home renovation company that also deals with venture capital, buying up different businesses. Throughout my career, I've been thrown into different positions and situations, including dealing with cyber attacks, which led to speaking engagements for accounts payable. I'm looking to go back to school to potentially become a CPA, and I'm also working with my father to implement me running his printing business, which he's run successfully for over 20 years. I don't have to be there to run it because I've been around it my entire life, so I can do that while still climbing the corporate ladder.

Ten minutes with Krystal

01What do you attribute your success to?

I honestly contribute it to my upbringing. I definitely saw, I mean, from my mother and my father worked very hard. My father ran a successful business for over 20 years, and my mother worked in corporate law for about 30 years at the biggest law firms in New York City, and she worked herself up. I think that I've always had that grit because of the both of them. But also with having a daughter, you know, life has happened because I had her young, and I probably did not ideally cross all the boxes that I wanted to cross off, but I was still able to push through and accomplish things as well. So I think that is something that I try to show her every day. You know, it's just more of, sometimes it's not as pretty, and sometimes you gotta go a little longer route to get what you deserve, but you'll get there.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My best advice for young women just starting out is to not overwhelm yourself and to literally do what you can, little by little. Like, you have this long goal of all these different things that you want to accomplish, but I would say, for me, getting through everything is just taking one step at a time, because I know myself, I get in your head, and you're just like, can I handle this? Can I do this? And then, depending if you have children or outside factors, or you want to upskill, it's really hard, but it's really about just taking it one day at a time and not listening to anyone else, just, you know, like, I have tunnel vision.
