Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kyra
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the guidance and mentorship I have received from the two providers I work under, Dr. Stephanie Pisano and Dr. Chantelle Mundy, as well as my manager, Tracey Smith. They took me under their wing, shared their knowledge, included me in seminars and meetings, and provided opportunities for me to learn and grow professionally. Their support has played a significant role in helping me become the best I can be in my role. I genuinely love what I do, and I am committed to continuously expanding my knowledge. Whenever I encounter a case involving a diagnosis I have not seen before, I ask questions and seek additional education so I can better understand the condition and provide patients with accurate, informed, and compassionate support.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to recognize that my journey is connected to the journeys of the people around me and to never assume that I know what someone else may be going through. A simple act of kindness, compassion, or encouragement can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. In my field, I have seen firsthand how much those small gestures matter, especially when patients return, remember my name, and know that they are genuinely cared for. That experience has taught me to approach every interaction with empathy, patience, and a willingness to make a positive impact.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to be confident in who you are and never feel that you have to change yourself to fit a particular mold. Even if you feel that you are too different, too rough around the edges, or unsure of where you belong, embrace your individuality because being authentic can open doors to opportunities you may not have expected. Be mindful, remain grateful, enjoy the journey, and treat others with the same kindness and respect you would want to receive. Most importantly, do not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are opportunities to learn, grow, and become better as you continue moving forward.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I see tremendous opportunities in specialty eye care as advanced lens technologies and personalized treatment options continue to improve outcomes for patients with complex vision needs. One of the most rewarding aspects of this field is the opportunity to help people who may have struggled with their vision for years regain functional sight, confidence, and greater independence through specialized care. At the same time, the field presents challenges that require professionals to continuously learn, adapt to evolving technologies and diagnoses, and stay informed while navigating increasingly complex healthcare systems. Through it all, maintaining a patient-centered approach and ensuring that each individual feels informed, supported, and cared for remains essential.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are family, commitment, compassion, and being present for the people who matter most. I am very family-oriented, and after 21 years of marriage to my high school sweetheart and raising two children, I have learned the importance of being intentional with the people I love. When I come home from work, I make it a priority to pour into my children, ask about their day, and be fully present with them. My family provides me with the love, support, and foundation that allow me to give my best professionally, and I strive to extend that same care, respect, and dedication to the patients and people I work with.
