Her Story
About Laci
Laci Sandefur works in the nonprofit sector, a field new to her, while drawing on her longstanding interest in psychology that began in her 20s. Her path includes early involvement in sports as a student athlete, an injury that shifted her direction, training in cosmetology for hands-on experience, and years working in healthcare where she observed gaps in post-hospitalization support for patients dealing with trauma and medication management. Motivated to address these needs through community-based rather than strictly clinical environments, Sandefur has earned certificates in OSHA, cosmetology, first aid, and several healthcare topics. She is advancing her education with an associate's degree in general education, an Associate of Arts expected by fall, and a Bachelor's in Psychology as a current junior. Sandefur volunteers with Nearby Nature and the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery, both nonprofits in Eugene, Oregon, and regularly participates in food banks and food drives. She attributes her success to her inner drive, tenacity, resilience, and growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Laci
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success comes from my inner drive and tenacity. I'm internally motivated rather than externally. I have a growth mindset and see challenges as opportunities for growth instead of setbacks. My resilience helps me continue working in the community despite obstacles.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice came from my high school basketball coach: practice makes perfect, but if you're practicing wrong, you're never gonna get it right. It's perfect practice makes perfect. This has kept me on a straight and narrow path by trying to be my best at all times.
