Her Interview

Ten minutes with Lady Charmaine

01What do you attribute your success to?

My faith in God to order my footsteps and direction of my life

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My father advised me right before starting at a Fortune 50 company that I should work for myself instead of anyone else. Though I initially thought it was bad advice, it stuck with me. Later, working for Local 32BJSEIU union in 2007 reinforced my desire to be my own boss, leading me to become a pastor and launch my online ministry in 2008.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Seek God's face, pray about it, read the Bible, and believe it as the Word of God. Find a reputable church who ordains you after training. Get training and help so you are not starting with no clue. Be open to having mentors. Get a mentor, two if you can.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Getting paying clients

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being honest, disciplined, trustworthy, having empathy and compassion for people. Even with skills, without these human emotions it was difficult to do a good job as a Human Resources Executive. Part of my job included firing people. I made firing a safe space, offered help with resumes, never fired on Friday, kept confidentiality. Each time I did one, it tore at my heart and made me see that Human Resources wasn't for me. Since I was 5 years old, I loved the Lord. I did an exercise at Cornell University in 1991 which asked me what would I do if I didn't have to worry about making a living and I said be a Pastor. I didn't think I could make a living being a Pastor so I went to work as a Human Resources Executive. In 2007, while still working in Corporate America I wrote my first book. The feelings I experienced being a Published Author and Publisher was incredible!!! I felt happy and it gave my life meaning. I worked for 6 months more than quit and pursued my first love, ministry. Working for God is the best job I have ever had.
