Her Story
About LaFonda
LaFonda Sutton-Burke is a seasoned federal law enforcement executive and strategic consulting leader whose career spans more than three decades of distinguished public service. Beginning her journey as a clerk in Oklahoma, she made a pivotal transition into federal law enforcement with the U.S. Customs Service on the southwest border in El Paso, Texas — a move that would set the foundation for an extraordinary career. Over the course of her tenure, she rose through the ranks to serve as a Senior Executive Service leader with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, taking on progressively senior roles that placed her at the helm of some of the nation's most complex and high-stakes border security operations, from the largest maritime cargo port in the United States to overseeing multi-billion dollar technology acquisition portfolios in Washington, D.C.
Throughout her federal career, Sutton-Burke demonstrated a rare ability to bridge operational excellence with strategic innovation. As Director of Field Operations for CBP's Chicago Field Office, she led nearly 1,400 employees across 28 ports of entry spanning 12 states, overseeing the processing of billions of dollars in trade, millions of international travelers, and a vast portfolio of enforcement and facilitation missions. Her leadership extended well beyond day-to-day operations — she spearheaded transformative initiatives in non-intrusive inspection technology, forged landmark public-private partnerships, and represented the United States at international forums including the World Customs Organization. Her academic investments mirror her professional accomplishments, having completed executive leadership programs at Harvard Kennedy School, the Naval Postgraduate School, and the National Defense University, among others.
Now, as President and Chief Operating Officer of LSB Consulting, Sutton-Burke channels her wealth of expertise into empowering private-sector organizations to navigate the complexities of federal partnerships and Homeland Security missions. Her firm specializes in border security operations, technology modernization, acquisition oversight, and organizational strategy — helping industry partners align innovative solutions with real-world mission needs. Beyond her consulting work, she remains deeply committed to community and mentorship, actively guiding young women toward financial freedom and leadership excellence. A proud member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, Women in Federal Law Enforcement, and the Senior Executive Service community, Sutton-Burke continues to lead with purpose, integrity, and an enduring dedication to both national security and the next generation of leaders.
