About LaKeisha
LaKeisha Brown has been with the federal government for 28 years and has spent 22 years with FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She serves as an Emergency Management Specialist and supervisor in a call center environment in Maryland. Brown began her government career with the Department of Defense, providing security details at the PAX terminal for high-profile individuals including the president and vice president. Throughout her tenure at FEMA, she has taken on multiple roles and leadership positions as a supervisor. She has experience in the Surge Capacity Force and Field Office Division, including a deployment for Hurricane Helene where she remained in Nashville for five months to assist with congressionals and exceeded payout goals for disaster survivors. Brown hopes to return to field operations in the next five years to directly support communities impacted by disasters. She encourages others entering the field to identify their passion among the agency's 26 cadres, pursue available trainings, and approach the work with seriousness and dedication, noting that the role operates 24-7.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't settle. Dig deep and find out what your passion is. We have 26 cadres. Take advantage of these trainings that's on the university level that you can actually transfer to another school if you want to. Make sure that anything you do, you don't look at it as just nothing, because it's something. Be very serious and passionate about this job. It's 24-7, it does not stop.
