Her Story

About Lakeita

I have been in law enforcement for 18 years, with a total of about 8 years in leadership and management. For the last 4 years, I have served as a sergeant, which is my current leadership position. In my role, I manage operations and lead people - that's my philosophy. I oversee the operational framework of the organization, making sure that policies and rules are being followed, and I protect the property, the premises, and the people of the building. I lead about 15 officers who are under my tutelage. My most notable professional achievement is impacting the lives of those who I lead and developing them, because due to my leadership in developing other individuals, it allows them to be able to move up and be promoted to other positions also. I was inspired to get into this field when I was in my early 20s, studying criminal justice. I was approached by a man who was the chief of a local police department, and when he presented that opportunity to me, it was the perfect fit because I always knew I wanted to serve people. I knew that protecting and serving the people would be right up my alley. Beyond my law enforcement career, I'm also an entrepreneur with a nonprofit and a few businesses, because I love to serve - that's one of my greatest hobbies.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the Most High God - I have to give Him all the honor and glory, because without Him, I wouldn't be where I'm at. I've superseded the expectation of what the statistics would probably say someone that comes from such a background of mine would be at this moment. I really believe that because I have a servant's heart, just always taking care and looking out for people has helped me. Because of that, not only have I made influence, but I've made an impact.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Always take care of your people, and they'll take care of you.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Always do the right thing. Always do what's right. I'm thinking from that law enforcement perspective, because there's so much wrong that happens, especially within law enforcement. If you just do the right thing, you will be okay. Just always do what's right.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is because of the picture that's sometimes painted of law enforcement. Some of us that are good officers doing the right thing still get seen as a total package, even with the ones that's doing it wrong. So they label us all as one. You put on the uniform, and you're one of them.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Treating people well and being fair. Fair. Being fair and treating people well.
