About LaKresha

Hakimah Carter serves as the business manager of her small retail business, Anissa Boutique, also known as Anissa Beauty, which she opened in August 2022 from her home office in Harrisonville, Missouri. The business focuses on modest clothing and essential items such as hijabs and halal products aligned with her practice of the Muslim faith. In addition, she works as a home health aide for a home care and hospice organization, assisting clients with daily activities, hygiene, medical needs including blood pressure and glucose monitoring, and supporting independent living at home. Carter earned a Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Management from Avila University after completing prior coursework at St. Mary's in Leavenworth and MCC. She also holds a CDL license and gained college credits through the Companions in Chillicothe program at Rockhurst University while incarcerated. She is a member of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City and draws on her experiences to emphasize faith-based values, ethics, and integrity in her work serving the community through both her retail business and caregiving role.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Make sure you enjoy what you're doing and don't give up on your dreams. You can't just depend on one way to generate income.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure that she's using the right guidance and putting God first, being a believer. Put the greatest common good first to not be easily influenced. They deserve to be loved and their feelings and opinions matter.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include stakeholders wanting higher social or economic status, lack of fair equity for minorities, social acceptance, and finances. Opportunities exist but require diligence, patience, and self-care while recovering from losses.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Faith-based and religious values, ethics, and integrity to implement values in actions. Working together for a common purpose.
