Her Story

About Larissa

I started working when I was young, and during my college years, I've always worked. At first, I worked for 3 years in a mall in food things - I worked in a milkshake store as an attendant. Then I did an internship of 6 months in my field, and after that, I returned to the same company at my first job. They invited me to come back, but this time in their office, so I worked for another year and a half in that company as a financial assistant. I really like to work with numbers, so this was very good for me. I learned a lot in that position. This was during my college years, so it helped me to grow and to know how to manage my time and my responsibilities. I had already moved out from my mother's house and was living with my partner. It was a long journey, but it was very important for my growth and how to deal with being an adult. I did a whole year of international relations before I graduated in social sciences, and in that first year of International Relations, I decided that I didn't want to continue that course but would like to explore more of social sciences. In my first year of social sciences, I discovered that I wanted to keep going in the field of sociology. It was during a presentation I did about Durkheim when a colleague was nodding along while I was explaining the whole idea, and that's when I noticed how fulfilling it would be for me to teach sociology in an academic field. Then I decided that I wanted to become a professor, so now I'm on that journey.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think the fact that I'm here in the U.S. and I'm going to get a PhD in Florida State University, that's like the 11th public university of the United States, is a huge opportunity. It's going to open a lot more opportunities for me in the future. Even now that I'm not currently in the PhD program because it didn't begin yet, I'm already having the opportunity to work with super qualified professors and inspiring women. So this, for me, is the most important thing. About the challenges, I think the fact that I had to move to another country made this a challenge. The fact that I'm here talking in a language that I'm not so comfortable with because I'm not a native speaker is something that is a challenge for me, but also to know all the differences of a new country and everything. It's not specific about the field for me, but I know this is also important to keep growing and adapt because it will help me in the future, so I'm also engaging with these challenges.
