LaShaun Suber is a seasoned career coach and workshop instructor based in the Detroit Metropolitan Area, with a professional journey spanning over two decades in human resources, talent acquisition, and career development. She currently serves as a Workshop Instructor and Career Coach at MiSide, where she provides guidance to professionals looking to advance in their careers, navigate job transitions, and develop leadership skills. LaShaun’s expertise spans recruitment, employee development, and career strategy, with a focus on practical, actionable support for clients across manufacturing, engineering, operations, and tech sectors.

LaShaun began her career at IBM as a copy assistant, a role that unexpectedly led her into recruiting when she supported a secretary who moved into a supervisory position. Embracing this new direction, she became a recruiter team lead and quickly discovered her passion for helping people succeed professionally. Her career evolved to include corporate HR roles where she managed generalist responsibilities, payroll and benefits administration, and policy development. Recognizing the impact of coaching and mentorship, she founded The Career Academy in 2015, offering services such as resume writing, interview preparation, salary negotiation, and business start-up guidance.

Beyond career coaching, LaShaun is deeply committed to financial literacy and empowerment. She is a certified credit specialist trained by the National Foundation of Credit Counseling and actively engages in speaking events on homeownership and financial planning. She also teaches middle school students about financial literacy, helping the next generation build strong credit profiles and achieve financial independence. Known for her integrity, empathy, and people-first approach, LaShaun blends professional expertise with a genuine dedication to helping individuals and communities thrive.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

For over two decades, LaShaun has been the driving force behind countless professional transformations. With 20 years of experience in HR, she launched her career academy in 2015, offering career coaching and a keen eye for "bringing out the story" in a resume. Understanding the hurdles of entrepreneurship—from securing an EIN to structuring a business—she created a comprehensive 16-point guide to help others launch with confidence. Yet, LaShaun’s influence extends beyond career placement. Having overcome a childhood stutter through speech therapy, she has transformed her voice into a powerful asset, now commanding the stage as a public speaker to advocate for financial literacy and credit education. Whether she is conducting a mock interview or teaching someone to build a powerful credit profile, LaShaun’s greatest joy remains the same: she simply wants people to win.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'm always a people person and always the cheerleader. I want people to win. That's what drives everything I do. Whether I'm working on resumes, doing mock interviews, helping someone start a business, or teaching credit education, it all comes back to the people. I like to bring out the story in a resume because your resume is your representative until you actually get to the job interview. I prepare people for behavioral interviews so they can think on their feet and answer questions about conflict resolution and problem-solving. I want to set people up for success with powerful credit profiles, 401Ks, brokerage accounts, and high-yield savings accounts. I don't want them to be caught off guard by unexpected car repairs or job loss. My family is my world - my husband, my three children, and my three grandchildren. I'm heavily involved in my sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, where I've been a member for 36 years. I love spending time with my best friend and we travel a lot together. I give my time instead of spreading myself thin, so I focus deeply on what matters most to me.
