LaShondra Butler is a project manager and interior architecture professional whose career bridges engineering, consulting, and design. With a foundation in Industrial and Systems Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, she began her career in technology consulting at Accenture, where she spent more than seven years working in digital transformation, systems implementation, and large-scale project management. During that time, she developed a strong ability to translate complex operational requirements into practical solutions—skills that would later shape her approach to design and the built environment.

LaShondra’s path into interior architecture reflects both her lifelong passion for design and her commitment to problem-solving. Inspired by childhood experiences working alongside her father in his construction business, she always had an eye for materials, space, and aesthetics. After being affected by a large technology layoff following maternity leave, she chose to fully pursue her creative calling. She returned to school to earn her Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture from Academy of Art University while simultaneously building her design practice, Butlerfly Interiors. Through her work, she manages the full lifecycle of projects—including space planning, drafting, sourcing materials, coordinating contractors, and overseeing installations—across residential and small commercial environments.

Today, LaShondra combines the analytical discipline of engineering with human-centered design to create spaces that support functionality, community, and belonging. As a design consultant with CB2 and the founder of Butlerfly Interiors, she works with clients to transform homes and shared spaces through thoughtful layouts, curated materials, and strategic design solutions. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand into commercial and community-focused projects, particularly “third spaces” in underserved urban neighborhoods—places where people can gather, connect, and feel a sense of dignity and community.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I innately love solving problems. If I can get to a solution, or a variation of a solution, or a compromise, then I feel like the deed is done. That's what keeps the fire fueled - this is the problem, let's solve it. I bring that problem-solver's mindset from my engineering background into every design project. Whether it's figuring out the perfect layout for a kitchen or managing the relationships between clients and contractors, I'm always focused on finding that solution. That drive to solve problems and make things work is what has carried me through my entire career, from tech consulting to interior design.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that rejection often sometimes leads to discouragement, or feeling like a failure, but it could actually just be redirection. Taking that leap and understanding that you have all the tools, and that some of those tools are even transferable, could be extremely helpful in redefining what that pivot looks like. Don't let rejection discourage you. Instead, see it as the universe redirecting you toward where you're really meant to be. You already have everything you need, and many of your skills can transfer in ways you might not expect. Trust yourself and take that leap.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I mostly just want to take on projects that feel a little bit larger than life, or that I'm part of something larger, with more impact, maybe on that community and that area. I'm looking at third spaces in urban areas that maybe are underrepresented or underdeveloped, but still have a need for a space for people to gather for coffee or for arcade games and such, or even just a nice hotel lobby. I would love to take on commercial spaces entirely. I'm also learning that it takes a team effort, and so I'm in search of that team and what that looks and feels like, which is why I kind of carry the name consultant so heavy - I have to let people know that I'm available to join a team if need be. That's mostly what I'm aiming towards, once all the schooling and things is done.
