Her Story

About Latishia

I've been in higher ed since my late 20s. I started at Clark Atlanta University for 8 years, then moved to the Health Plan of San Joaquin in public service. When I moved to Durham, an opportunity came up at Duke University where I've been for 12 years. My background is in communication and public service, which made it a natural fit. I love working with alumni and faculty, and recently ran the Forever Learning Summer Academy program, increasing enrollment. I'm a lifelong learner who enjoys helping shape students' lives from freshman year through doctoral degrees.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Latishia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've had some really good mentors, some really good women who shape my life, and the way that I look at life, and my work ethic. Because of them, I am who I am today.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay curious and leverage your networks. Don't forget who helped us get where we are. Identify people who could help you get certain places. Be ready when opportunity comes knocking.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

At Duke, I see women getting there in leadership roles. We're not at 100% yet, but there is an opportunity before us that if we harness this moment, we can certainly get there.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Work ethics, integrity, compassion, passion for what I'm doing, and being intentional. These are values that I pass on to my children.
