About LaTonia
LaTonia Christian is a seasoned financial operations leader with more than 30 years of progressive experience in public sector finance, accounting, budgeting, procurement, and organizational management. She currently serves as the Financial Operations Manager (Financial Specialist II) for the Fairfax County Public Library, where she oversees financial operations supporting the County's 23 public library branches. Her responsibilities include managing financial reporting, book sales reconciliation, State Aid grant administration, procurement, fund management, and financial support for library kiosks and online payment systems. She works collaboratively with county leadership and partner agencies to ensure Revising/Updating the FCPL's Financial Accountability Plan(FAP), Billing and Collection Plan and the Focus Reconciliation Paln. fiscal accountability, regulatory compliance, and efficient financial operations.
Before joining the Fairfax County Public Library, LaTonia held several financial and administrative leadership positions with Fairfax County's Community Services Board and Administration for Human Services. Throughout her career, she has developed extensive expertise in financial administration, budget management, grants administration, process improvement, and operational leadership while supporting a wide range of county programs and services.
LaTonia earned a Bachelor of Individualized Study in Health Information Systems from George Mason University, where she received the Student Academic Achievement Award in recognition of her academic excellence. She also holds an Associate of Science in General Studies, a minor in Finance and a Bookkeeping Certification from Northern Virginia Community College. Her educational background, combined with decades of professional experience, has provided her with a strong foundation in financial management, strategic planning, organizational leadership, and effective communication.
Committed to lifelong learning, LaTonia continues to expand her professional knowledge through leadership development, project management, and financial management training. She remains an engaged George Mason University alumna and values continuous professional growth.
Beyond her professional career, LaTonia is deeply committed to serving her community. She has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, her church, The Good Fight of Faith Food Pantry, No Child Left Behind, women's shelters, and Volunteer Fairfax. She also serves as a volunteer tax preparer through Fairfax County's VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program during tax season and provides both in-person and remote notary services.
Passionate about empowering others, LaTonia is dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote economic empowerment, education, health, and social services. She encourages young women pursuing careers in finance and public service to lead with confidence, embrace continuous learning, remain resourceful, and pursue excellence while creating meaningful opportunities for themselves and their communities.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the mentors who have supported and encouraged me throughout my journey—especially a professor who believed in me during difficult times and my grandparents, who instilled in me the importance of perseverance. Their guidance, wisdom, and example have shaped my approach to both personal and professional growth.
I’m also deeply grateful for my family and friends who stood by me and never let me give up—even through all the complaining. Their patience, honesty, and unwavering support kept me grounded and motivated.
I believe in paying that support forward. By mentoring younger colleagues in my office—offering guidance, sharing resources, and helping them build confidence and practical skills—I strive to create the same kind of encouragement and opportunity that was given to me. Supporting others is not only meaningful, but it reinforces the values that have guided my own path.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to stay true to my values and to do what I love. I was encouraged to choose a career that aligns with what I’m passionate about. I have always loved numbers since I was a child, and that passion has driven my growth in the financial field and strengthened my commitment to supporting others in need.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering my industry to understand that success does not always come easily, but with determination and the right support, it is achievable. Take the time to learn about the resources available to you and seek out the guidance and assistance you need to grow. If you have a genuine passion for helping others, as I do, this can be an incredibly rewarding career path. Ultimately, finding fulfillment in the work you do makes the challenges worthwhile and can lead to a meaningful and successful career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would encourage young women entering my industry to remember that success does not always come easily, but with determination and the right support, it is absolutely within reach. Take the time to understand the resources available to you, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors who can help you grow. If you have a genuine passion for helping others, as I do, this field can be incredibly fulfilling. When you find meaning in your work, the challenges become opportunities, and your career becomes not just a job, but a chance to make a real impact.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are service, compassion, and a strong commitment to helping others. I believe in giving back to my community and actively support a variety of causes and nonprofit organizations through volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, my church, the Good Fight of Faith food pantry, the No Child Left Behind program in Fairfax County, alumni organizations, Volunteering at the Libraries during tax season and women’s shelters. These experiences have strengthened my belief in the power of compassion, the importance of community involvement, and the impact we can make when we dedicate ourselves to improving the lives of others.
God is significant in my life because He’s the One who steadies me when everything else feels unsure. I’ve had moments where I didn’t know what direction to take, or I felt overwhelmed by what was in front of me—and every time, God showed up with peace, clarity, and strength. He reminds me that I am never walking alone. His presence is my comfort, His guidance is my anchor, and His love is my reassurance that I can face whatever comes my way.
A scripture that speaks to this for me is Isaiah 41:10:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
