Her Story
About LaTonya
Tonya Anderson owns Anderson Counseling and Associates, a private practice in mental health. She began her career creating programs for children at the YMCA in the Houston Third Ward community and later served as Southern Region Director for the YMCA. After working in pharmaceutical sales, she returned to psychology, initially focusing on children who had experienced abuse through a CPS contract. She then worked with individuals with severe mental illness before establishing her private practice, initially serving 90% children and 10% adults. As her children grew older, she adjusted her practice to 90% adults and 10% children. Anderson also serves as a professor and volunteers with New Hope as a hostess for six years, as well as creating blessing bags with her family. She credits her mother Gloria, a single mother who overcame depression, for her success and aspires to expand her practice and speak at conferences to support women and single mothers.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with LaTonya
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my mom Gloria. Even though she was a single mother with a hard life and depression, she always worked hard to give me opportunities like dance and activities, believed in me, and helped me believe I could leave our small town and make something of myself.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Build your network because getting into the right rooms and on insurance panels is important; get with a practice that already has panels to start your career. Also practice self-care and compartmentalize so you don't bring work home, especially with serious cases.
