Her Interview
Ten minutes with Latoya
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance and always striving to be a better person. There was a time when I didn't care because I was overweight with low self-esteem and wasn't coping with my PTSD from military service. Staying busy helps me cope and inspires other veterans struggling with mental illness to get into something so their mind doesn't have time to think about negative stuff.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to never stay stagnant. Be a lifelong learner because there's always something to learn, always develop yourself, and always strive to reach another level. Basically, don't stay stagnant or comfortable because changes all the time.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Most definitely stay focused and don't worry about your social life or dating. Focus on your job and pursuing what's needed to be successful in the job.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Business development is the biggest challenge right now. When I tried to do it on my own, I thought I understood it, but after speaking with partners connected with NVBDC, they broke it down and it all makes sense. It's definitely a process to getting a contract. I'm going to be partnering with Delta Point next month and they're gonna handle all the marketing and the outreach for me.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Definitely loyalty and standing on your word and your actions. It's easy to say something, but your actions will always speak louder. A lot of people lack that nowadays. They're so quick to say something but they don't follow through.
