About LaToya

LaToya Gray serves as Director of School Leadership and Operations. With 26 years in education, her work centers on supporting school improvement across 14 schools. She begins her days in school buildings, walking classrooms to observe instruction and data, and listening to principals about operational and other barriers that hinder effectiveness. Her team creates conditions and removes obstacles so principals can focus on teaching and learning, helping students achieve. Previously in the Office of Curriculum Instruction, she draws on her background in special education and curriculum. The role was created by the superintendent two and a half years ago, moving her into this position to leverage her experience. She attributes her success to her faith in God, supportive family who adjust during transitions, and leaders who recognized her potential, starting from her early role as a speech-language pathologist.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with LaToya

01What do you attribute your success to?

My faith in God and my relationship with Him has been number one. My family has always been supportive of my journeys and opportunities, adjusting as needed like reducing cooking days during transitions. Other leaders have seen potential in me that I didn't see in myself, like my superintendent who created this role and moved me to it, and previous principals who encouraged me to pursue leadership roles starting from speech-language pathologist.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The most important thing is to lean in, learn, and listen. Transition requires listening to the lived experiences of those you serve. Build relationships so people trust you. Respond to their specific needs rather than imposing your own lens. Keep ideas in your pocket until the timing is right. Stay curious and ask good questions to help others see things differently.
