About Laura
Laura A. Black, DNP-S, MBA, BSN, RN, BIS, is a registered nurse with experience in correctional and behavioral health, as well as healthcare administration and leadership. She recently completed her Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP) degree at New Mexico State University, with plans to pursue a postgraduate certificate in psychiatric mental health. Her diverse professional background has strengthened her commitment to addressing the complex healthcare needs of underserved populations and advancing compassionate, comprehensive care.
Black’s long-term vision is to establish a psychiatric facility in southwest New Mexico, specifically in Lordsburg, that would provide integrated services supporting recovery, reentry, primary care, pediatrics, and mental health. In addition to her nursing career, she operates a mental health and life coaching business focused on personal growth and empowerment. She is also developing the Campus Compass Initiative, a nonprofit designed to foster community gardening, connection, and camaraderie in rural communities with limited resources. Through these endeavors, Black seeks to create sustainable programs that improve access to healthcare, strengthen communities, and promote overall well-being.
Black attributes her success to her desire to inspire others, lead by example, and demonstrate that positive outcomes are possible through determination and purposeful action. She believes her journey can encourage others to recognize their own potential and understand that they can create better outcomes for themselves and their communities. For young women entering healthcare, she emphasizes the importance of asking questions whenever they are uncertain and approaching the profession with seriousness, responsibility, and respect. She encourages aspiring healthcare professionals to remember that their decisions can directly affect the lives of others and to prioritize knowledge, competence, compassion, and patient care over appearances.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my desire to inspire others, lead by example, and demonstrate what is possible when we strive for better. I believe there is always an opportunity to improve, make a meaningful difference, and create positive change, even when circumstances are challenging. That belief motivates me to step forward, take initiative, and show others how much better things can be when we approach them with purpose, compassion, and determination.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering nursing is to never be afraid to ask questions, especially when you are uncertain about something. Patient safety and quality care should always come before worrying about how others perceive you. Nursing is not simply an aesthetic or a title; it is a serious profession in which people’s lives are entrusted to you. Take your responsibilities seriously, continue learning, and remain confident in seeking guidance when needed. There is certainly room to enjoy the profession and build meaningful relationships along the way, but your primary focus should always be providing competent, compassionate, and safe care.
