Ten minutes with Laura

01What do you attribute your success to?

When people ask about my success as a Banking Center Manager, the first thing I want to do is shift the spotlight. My proudest achievements aren't personal accolades; they are the milestones my team reaches and the impact we make on the families and local businesses in our community.

I remember stepping into a branch where our personal bankers were struggling to hit their KPI goals, which naturally created high pressure. Instead of just pushing numbers, I focused on daily, supportive coaching. We broke down their targets into actionable, bite-sized goals and role-played conversations to build their confidence.

By staying calm and steady under that pressure, I was able to create an environment where they felt safe to learn. Within no time we turned those metrics around and became a top-performing branch. Honestly, the biggest reward wasn't just the numbers; it was seeing those tellers and personal bankers get promoted to the next level in their careers.

At the end of the day, I measure my success by the trust we build. Whether we are going out into the community to teach financial literacy at local schools or helping a small business owner secure the funding they need to grow, it all comes down to lifting others up. For me, true leadership is about opening doors so the people around you can thrive.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Early in my career, a mentor told me, 'If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you are not sure you can do it, say yes—then learn how to do it later.' That single piece of advice fundamentally shaped my approach to leadership, client trust, and continuous growth."

  • Empathy First: I practice active listening before offering any financial solutions. By truly understanding a client's core needs rather than just pushing products, we build a foundation of genuine trust.
  • Master the Basics: You cannot lead or advise effectively without knowing your operations, compliance, and numbers inside out. It gives my team the confidence to guide customers through even the most complex transactions.
  • Say Yes to Growth: Embracing new projects when I felt unprepared pushed my career forward. I model this for my team by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones to learn and grow.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would give them three pieces of advice:

1. Build a "Board of Directors" (Sponsorship Over Mentorship)

  • Don't just look for mentors who tell you what to do. Look for sponsors who will mention your name in rooms you aren't in yet. Be intentional about building genuine working relationships with leaders across different departments.

2. Take on the "Thorniest" Challenges

  • Don't shy away from complex problems or difficult restructuring projects. In retail banking, stepping up to solve a big, thorny issue is how you establish your professional brand and accelerate your growth.

3. Communicate Simply

  • Master the art of translating financial complexity into plain English. Whether you're advising a client on wealth management or guiding a customer through loan products, your ability to be a clear, empathetic communicator is your greatest asset.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in retail banking today isn't a lack of knowledge, but an execution gap regarding digital transformation and AI.

However, this opens a massive opportunity to use AI and data to offer hyper-personalized advice and rebuild consumer trust.

For me, the most exciting part of this era is how these tools can be leveraged to empower customers and improve financial accessibility.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My leadership centers on empathy, integrity, and sustainability. I empower my team by building trust, delegating meaningful work, and creating safety for new ideas. This care for my people drives exceptional client satisfaction, while strict personal boundaries and rest ensure I lead with high energy and zero burnout.
