Her expertise includes program development, volunteer and team leadership, curriculum design, educational outreach, training coordination, and strategic communications, all driven by a commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for learners and communities. Earlier in her career, she held interpretation and education roles with the National Park Service and museums, building extensive experience in cultural resource education and public history. She also spent six and a half years as an adjunct professor at a community college, further demonstrating her dedication to teaching, mentorship, and lifelong learning. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her collaborative leadership, exceptional organizational skills, and ability to develop impactful programs that connect people with educational and cultural resources. Griego earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Political Science from New Mexico Highlands University, graduating summa cum laude and as a member of Phi Kappa Phi. An active member of the Community Educators Network, she attributes her lifelong passion for education and history to her grandfather, who inspired her appreciation for history and culture from an early age. Guided by integrity, collaboration, and service, Griego is committed to making education and cultural resources accessible while empowering individuals, volunteers, and communities to thrive.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Laura

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a lifelong passion for education, history, and serving others, as well as the values instilled in me by my grandfather. Growing up in a ranching family, he taught me that true knowledge comes from curiosity, hard work, and a commitment to helping others understand the world around them. His love of history, culture, and lifelong learning inspired my career and continues to guide my work today. Over the past two decades, my career has evolved from teaching in the classroom to museum education, public history, and nonprofit program management, but my purpose has remained the same: making education, resources, and opportunities accessible so people can grow and thrive. I believe my success has also come from building genuine human connections, leading teams with empathy, fostering collaboration among staff and volunteers, and developing innovative programs that create meaningful impact. Along the way, I have learned to embrace life's unexpected turns with resilience and adaptability, knowing that every experience has strengthened my ability to serve my community and help others discover their own meaningful paths.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to pursue work that truly inspires me and allows me to make a positive difference. While financial stability is important, I've always believed that the most fulfilling careers are those that align with your values and contribute something meaningful to your community. My loving and supportive family and several mentors encouraged me to choose a path that makes me feel energized and purposeful because when you're passionate about your work, that enthusiasm naturally inspires others. I've found that doing good creates a ripple effect—when we invest our talents in serving others and strengthening our communities, we encourage those around us to do the same.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Follow your heart. Find your calling by paying attention to what inspires you and what aligns with your skillset and natural abilities. Don't be afraid to try new things and pivot when you have to. While we all strive to do well in this world, remember it's just as important to do good. The world needs people who are doing good.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In the world of nonprofit organizations and education, the challenge is often funding. There is no shortage of community support, but obtaining and managing the resources to fulfill our missions can present its challenges. However, the opportunities abound and always outweigh the challenges. When it comes to education and supporting youth, there are always opportunities to inspire, to connect people with resources, to introduce new information or new ways of thinking, and to create meaningful experiences that create lasting impact.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me, both professionally and personally, are lifelong learning, creativity, family, and maintaining a strong connection to the world around me. I have an enduring passion for education and knowledge, which extends beyond my career through my love of reading and participation in a book club. Because much of my professional work involves strategic thinking, program development, and curriculum design, I also value opportunities to be creative and work with my hands. I enjoy baking and crafting because they allow me to create something tangible and rewarding. Outside of work, I cherish spending time in nature, traveling when I can, and being at home with my husband, son, and our beloved pets. These experiences keep me grounded, inspire my creativity, and remind me of the importance of balance, meaningful relationships, and approaching both life and work with curiosity, compassion, and purpose.
