About Laura
Laura Prins has served 29 years in law enforcement with the Memphis Police Department. She started her career in corrections at the Shelby County Corrections Center in 1998 and worked there for about two years before moving to Shelby County Police and then joining the Memphis Police Department after training at the Memphis Police Academy. Over the years, she worked in patrol, was recruited to the vice team for six months, then the drug team for about a year, followed by burglary where she enjoyed catching those who violated people's privacy. She spent time in internal affairs for three years, moved to felony assault, returned to internal affairs on the security squad for five years, and came back to patrol before being promoted to sergeant, her current role. Laura holds certifications in radiation and detecting bombs from schools in Las Vegas and New Mexico, sexually exploited children certifications, and FEMA classes. She is somewhat bilingual in Spanish after taking Spanish 1, 2, and 3. Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Emergency Management Services at Bethel University, which she expects to complete by next December, she plans to remain in the public service sector after retiring in January, possibly in search and rescue or disaster response.
