Her Story

About Laura

I'm a proposal manager for a business consulting firm that specializes in strategic planning, leadership consulting, and organizational development. I've been at this company for almost 4 years. Throughout my 20-year career, I've worked at different industries across North America in consulting, from fields like financial services, environmental, and engineering services. I really just like highlighting the benefits and strengths of my firm. We mostly serve government agencies and higher education. I started working at a consulting engineering firm in my hometown as a receptionist, and I've been fortunate enough to have really strong and respectable female leaders along the way that have led me up to where I am now. I consider myself a lifelong learner, so I'm constantly checking to see how I can be relevant in my industry and improve my skills through professional development and certifications. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteer work, especially as a Board Member and Fundraising Chair or an adult literacy nonprofit organization. While I've worked on multimillion-dollar projects and won large contracts, I'm relationship-focused, so I really take to heart the relationships that I nurture even after each workplace.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My very first leader taught me a lot about the business world when I was in my early 20s. She really believed in continuous improvement and learning, and she taught me to take everything that we do, whether it's in the workplace, or education, or our personal background, and apply that no matter where our future leads us. She said nothing is ever a waste. It's collectively we bring that towards our future work and our personal selves.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would ask her what her interests are and what she feels her strengths are. If she's looking for a new role or still in the stage of exploring what career she wants to do, I would walk her through options, career-wise, in the business world, but also introduce her to volunteer options and professional memberships and certifications available in the field she's interested in.
