Her Story

About Laura

Laura Swartz is the owner of a premier pet sitting business based in St. Augustine, Florida, where she provides high-end care including long-term overnight stays of 7 to 14 days, day visits, dog field trips, and animal transport for events such as weddings. She has worked with animals her entire life, beginning as a kennel tech on her birthday, serving as a veterinary technician for 13 years including as a lead tech and key holder, and later working as an environmental scientist and GIS analyst for an engineering firm for 10 years. After becoming chronically ill, she transitioned from that role and started her pet sitting business, which she runs as her own boss with two employees while maintaining an LLC that includes plans for an online store selling supplies. Swartz earned a bachelor's degree in science around age 25 or 26, which supported her earlier environmental work protecting Florida wildlife and endangered species. She serves as a representative for the Florida Native Plant Society Beluthahatchee Chapter in St. Johns County, which she helped start, and volunteers with the St. Augustine Humane Society, attending events and emphasizing the value of community involvement. Originally from Tallahassee, Florida, she moved to St. Augustine and views starting her business as a notable achievement. Her expertise centers on animal medical care, allowing her to monitor vitals, hydration, and use urinalysis tools to prevent issues, and she remains calm in high-stress situations from her varied career experiences.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Someone gave me the advice that I could always be an artist and a photographer no matter what career field I chose, so I decided to get a science degree. That enabled me to work in the environmental field helping wildlife. Another piece of advice is if I burn out or am not happy, slowly work towards changing that by diversifying education or changing career fields. I have switched careers multiple times by planning it out and working towards a goal. Don't be scared to diversify your education or change your career field.
