Her Interview

Ten minutes with Laura

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of hard work and a strong work ethic, supported by mentors and colleagues who believed in me and extended grace—particularly throughout my nonprofit career. I have consistently held myself accountable, striving to meet challenges without making excuses.

During one of the most demanding periods of my life, I was caring for a daughter with special needs while simultaneously supporting another daughter through significant medical issues. Even under those circumstances, I continued to fulfill my professional responsibilities, including planning major fundraising events from a hospital room.

While I remained committed to delivering results, I was also fortunate to have individuals who trusted my capabilities and provided the flexibility and understanding I needed to succeed, rather than assuming limitations. Ultimately, my success reflects both the support and belief of others, and my own determination, and commitment to getting the job done.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me center on cultivating a strong support system while also serving as a trusted source of support for my team. The work we do can be emotionally demanding, yet it is equally rewarding. Knowing that we are helping others, making a meaningful difference, and contributing to something that truly matters provides a deep sense of purpose.

I believe it is essential to foster an environment where individuals feel comfortable asking for help and acknowledging when they are struggling. There is a misconception in our society that strength requires self-reliance at all times, and that seeking help is a sign of weakness. In reality, the opposite is true. The willingness to be vulnerable, to engage trusted colleagues, and to say, “I’m struggling—can we work through this together?” demonstrates both strength and self-awareness.

Effective leadership requires the ability to recognize personal limits and prioritize well-being. When individuals are overwhelmed, they are less able to support their teams or lead effectively. Taking care of oneself is not separate from leadership—it is foundational to it.

My family is my greatest priority and a constant source of motivation. I strive to lead by example by committing to excellence, maintaining a strong work ethic, and holding myself to the highest standards.
