Laurel “Laylo” Smith is a songwriter, recording artist, certified music producer, and audio engineer whose passion for music has shaped a dynamic career spanning recording, broadcasting, and digital media. With six years of experience in the music industry, she has established herself as an independent artist who oversees every stage of her creative process—from songwriting and recording to mixing and mastering in her personal studio. Her technical expertise in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and Pro Tools allows her to produce professional-quality music while maintaining complete creative control over her work. Alongside her music career, Smith has built a growing online presence through live streaming and social media, where she connects with an expanding audience of fans and supporters.
Smith's career began in radio after a live performance led to volunteer opportunities at a local station, where she quickly advanced from on-air talent to lead program director. She currently serves as Program Director and hosts The Laylo Show on KBSH 95.1 FM, combining her love of music with community engagement and broadcasting. Her accomplishments include earning the highest number of votes in a Too Hot Radio contest, which led to her first concert performance in New Orleans, as well as securing marketing support through Velpo Music. As an independent artist, she continues to write, record, and release original music while developing multiple projects and expanding her reach through live-streaming platforms, where she has grown a TikTok following of more than 20,000.
Driven by faith, Smith credits her journey to a calling from God to pursue music and to inspire others through messages of hope and perseverance. She is motivated by the desire to make her family proud while using her platform to encourage positivity and meaningful connection. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith and the purpose God placed on my heart. Six years ago, I felt called to use my voice to sing, and I've been committed to that calling ever since. My family, especially making my mother proud, continues to inspire me every day. Above all, I hope to make the world a better place through my music and remind people that they are never alone.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to never give up on what you can't imagine living without. Stay true to your passion, persevere through challenges, and never settle for less than what you deserve or what you're capable of achieving.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are honesty, loyalty, truth, fairness, equality, justice, compassion, and peace. My faith and my family are at the center of everything I do—they guide my decisions and give my life purpose. I strive to be a peacemaker, leading with integrity, treating others with kindness, and working to make a positive difference wherever I can.
