About Lauren

Lauren Coulter is a project manager at Johnson Controls, where she oversees the fire alarm division and manages all nurse call construction projects. Her responsibilities include scheduling technicians, conducting site walks, leading meetings with owners, coordinating materials and billing, and ensuring projects finish on time and within budget. She has managed as many as 60 open jobs simultaneously and often collaborates with electricians on various scales of work. Coulter began her construction career in 2009 after earlier roles in the electronics industry, starting as a field administrative assistant at Harkins Builders for nine years. She progressed to project coordinator at Tishman in New York City, where she also served as safety coordinator, then to assistant project manager at the Bannock Group before joining Johnson Controls. She earned an associates degree while raising her family and holds certifications in OSHA 30, CPR, fire alarm, and completed a project management course through Allison. Coulter credits raising six children with building her time management, negotiation, and scheduling skills. She has been mentored by professionals such as Len O'Terry and draws on advice to stay calm, listen, and process feedback before reacting. In addition to her professional work, she volunteers with hospice care visits and American veterans initiatives such as placing flags.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay calm, listen, and figure out what is really being said before reacting. Do not react immediately to situations that make you feel less than or angry, as that reaction may not serve you well as a grown woman in the work world. Be open to critiques as they help you grow.
