Covington attributes much of her success to her parents, who modeled the importance of passion, commitment, hard work, and maintaining balance between professional excellence and family presence. As a woman working in industries that have historically been male-dominated, she encourages young women to embrace challenges, recognize the value of their expertise, and use their skills to become confident voices in the room. She also believes in the importance of maintaining balance across the many dimensions of life, including career, family, friendship, and personal growth, while pursuing an empowered and fulfilling professional journey.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lauren
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success a lot to my parents. My dad grew up working multiple jobs and was an athletic director and coach, a very passion-driven man. My mom was incredibly good at her career but always found a way to be there for me, even if just for 2 minutes in the fourth quarter of my game. They laid the path before me and I get my inspiration and passion from them.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Being true to who I am and finding the fine balance between providing for your lifestyle outside of work while still being an empowered person invested in their career. Realizing you can be a mom, wife, and friend while also being a strong career woman who can rock a boardroom.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Not to be afraid of the challenge. Every professional feat I've made has been in a typically male-dominated industry. Dive in headfirst, knowing that my skill set as a woman empowers me to do more. Embrace challenge head-on and not being afraid to be a voice in the room, or perhaps even be the loudest voice in the room when you have to be.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Lack of education on healthcare planning is a gap for financial advisors to solve for their clients. For example, clients going into retirement age have no idea what to do about healthcare coverage before Medicare. The biggest thing is acknowledging the gap in educating on healthcare planning and cost across all age ranges.
