About Lauren
Lauren Hynicka is a Doctor of Pharmacy practicing at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore, MD, where she has served since 2009. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2007 after completing two years of postgraduate residency training and later obtained an integrative medicine certificate through the School of Medicine in 2017-2018. Her primary area of expertise lies in integrative medicine within the pharmacy field, emphasizing a whole-person approach that incorporates modalities such as supplements, mind-body techniques, yoga, and acupuncture alongside traditional medications. Hynicka has developed selective coursework including an Introduction to Integrative Medicine course and a culinary health and medicine elective focused on popular diets, meal preparation, and culinary conversations. For this work, she received the McGraw-Hill Innovation Award. She maintains active memberships in the American College of Clinical Pharmacists, where she helped create a community in integrative and functional medicine, and the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine, serving on the planning committee for their 2027 international meeting. Hynicka attributes her success to supportive family interactions, lifelong curiosity, open-mindedness, and influences from readings such as Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection and Michelle Obama's work, which encouraged her to embrace authenticity and reinvent her career path without rigid timelines. She advises young women entering the field to practice self-kindness, recognize that success takes many forms, and remain true to themselves. In her view, the field faces challenges from chronic diseases and a treatment-focused healthcare system but offers opportunities in lifestyle and integrative approaches to prevention, where pharmacists can play a key role if reimbursement models evolve to support it.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lauren
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a lot of different interactions with a lot of different people. My family really gave me a great start early on, I always felt loved and valued. Reading books like Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection and Michelle Obama's book helped me think about reinventing myself and living without prescribed timelines. Constant curiosity, being open-minded, and support from family and many people over the years have helped me keep thinking about what I want my career to look like.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice came from reading Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection, which taught me to not take myself so seriously, have fun while doing things, and live a more joy-filled life. It helped me bring my hobbies and interests into my work to marry different parts of who I am.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to be kind and patient with yourself, and to recognize that there's not one definition of success. It looks different for each and every one of us. Don't try to be anyone else, just be yourself.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There are challenges with chronic diseases like obesity and metabolic syndrome linked to type 2 diabetes and liver disease, and a healthcare system that values treatment over prevention. Opportunities exist in integrative and lifestyle medicine focusing on nutrition, exercise, sleep, social connection, stress management, and avoiding risky behaviors to keep people healthier and prevent chronic diseases. Pharmacists can play a key role as accessible healthcare professionals if reimbursement models support preventative care.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Authenticity is very important - being true to myself even if it's not what people expect. Also being open-minded, listening to others' experiences, lifelong learning and curiosity, as the more I know the less I feel I know, which leads to creativity and creative solutions.
