Her Story

About Lauren

I've been in my field for about 15 years now. I actually started my career in the finance world, working with mutual funds and annuities for about 3 years total. Before that, all through college, I did front of house management for a steakhouse. When I was becoming a mom, I quickly realized I wanted to do something a little bit more impactful, so I transitioned into education technology and the learning sector because I really wanted to give back and see where my work was driving forward. Currently, I run a team of 12 directors and others that fall within that, and we oversee all of the company's renewals, the entire renewal book of business, plus onboarding and training. I've only been with this company for seven and a half months. In my role, I'm mentoring my direct reports, forecasting for the business, looking for better ways to create better process and improve process, but also create process where there isn't one. I also really work to be a customer voice throughout the organization as we look at new products and enhancements to our products. What I'm most proud of throughout my entire journey is growing people. That is my most important thing and my most favorite thing that I get to do, is grow people to what they want to do in their career. I'm a person that likes to pick apart process and figure out how we can get better. I went through some Strength Finder training early in my career, and one of my things is Maximizer, and it's always just how do we get better. It's really rewarding when I can find ways and pick out something that maybe we're just not efficient in or we're not doing correctly, and then work cross-functionally to make that better.

Ten minutes with Lauren

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think a willingness to listen has been the key factor to my success. I think a lot of times as leaders, we just want to go one way or the highway, and I think one of the things that I have found most successful is being willing to listen and being willing to work cross-functionally to understand everybody's skin in the game, and how do we get to a mutually successful plan for everyone. It's not just about pushing my own agenda, but really understanding all perspectives and finding solutions that work for the whole organization.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think you need to make sure that it aligns with who you are as a person. I kind of made that mistake early on when I thought finance was where I wanted to go, but it didn't align with giving back. When you're starting in your career, you just need to really make sure that it's aligned with who you want to be and where you want to go, but also supports a work-life balance if kids are in your mix as well. Make sure that you're asking those questions, and they're not to set you back in your career, but it's to make you both successful in career and at home.
